Cetirizine - an active ingredient of Zyrtec - is a metabolite of hydroxyzine belongs to a group of competitive antagonist of histamine and blocks H1-histamine receptors. Cetirizine almost hasn't anticholinergic and antiserotonin effect. In therapeutic doses the drug almost hasn't sedative effect. The effect after Cetirizine taking in a single dose of 10 mg is observed after 20 minutes (50% of patients), 60 minutes (in 95% of patients), and lasts for more than 24 hours. On the background of the course of treatment tolerance to cetirizine antihistamine action does not develop. After cancelling of the therapy the effect lasts up to 3 days.
